Chapter 14

All non-RSVP guests will be set on fire. That is all. ~ Meme

On the day of Lexi and Luke’s wedding, Jessie woke with a start and picked up her phone. Five in the morning. She’d fallen asleep again with her lists. One eye open and the other at half-mast, she blinked and saw that she’d fallen asleep in the middle of writing a note. The words “remember to” were written next to an undecipherable scribble. Great. What was she supposed to remember? Gah!

She scrubbed a hand down her face.

“Maybe I shouldn’t have agreed to be a bridesmaid and also help coordinate the wedding of the year,” she mumbled to no one. “Not to mention invite the editor in chief of Bride Today to attend.”

What if something went wrong?

She’d already overextended herself. She and Sabrina had drawn straws to see who the maid of honor would be. It was the only fair way to do it. Sabrina had won, so Jessie was the bridesmaid. And it was unthinkable not to be a bridesmaid in her sister’s wedding. It was also crazy not to want to pull off the biggest event of the year. This could put the B&B on the map for weddings again. It had been a popular venue during Gram’s time, but then she’d mortgaged it to help seed the Wilder Sisters family band. They’d required instruments, costumes, contest entry fees, and a bus for touring. Even though they’d paid back what they owed Gram with interest over the years, the B&B lost its footing in the crowded marketplace and fell into disrepair.

It was only in the past year they’d been back home to Whistle Cove that all three of them had been working to restore the B&B. But there was so much to do and once their resources had dried up, little money. Then Luke Wyatt had returned home, and when the word got out, their bookings had skyrocketed. Now that they were in a good position, Jessie also wanted to get a loan to refinance and use the money to redecorate every room. Olga wanted two new industrial-sized double ovens and Jessie wanted badly to give them to her.

First, though, get the B&B to be a respectable venue for weddings again.

All this planning had almost worn her out. Well, at least she only had a few hours left to go. After the wedding, Jessie planned to sleep for a week. Lexi and Luke were going to honeymoon in San Francisco, or so she’d thought. Now she guessed they were technically just vacationing. She wondered if Rhett was taking a flight out the next day. If she recalled, he’d booked his room for another week which made her wonder why. But then again, who would ever want to leave Monterey Bay on purpose? She certainly didn’t envy anyone who had to leave.

But she refused to spend any more of her waking hours mooning over Rhett’s plans. Maybe he’d go, or maybe he’d stay another week. Whatever.
